1.Understandingtheamountofworkrequired
Thedifferenceintheamountandqualityofworkdemandedbyareasonablygoodcollegeandthatrequiredbythetypicalhighschoolismuchgreaterthanmoststudentsrealize.Priortocollege,schoolworkisusuallyparceledoutinsmallunitsandstudentsusuallyspendaminimumamountoftimestudying.Incollege,studentsmayactuallyworkharderthantheyhaveeverworkedbeforeandstillfindthattheireffortsarenotsufficient.

3.Vaguenessaboutlong-rangegoals
Mostmatureadultsrealizethatsuccessincollegedemandsagreatdealofhardwork.However,thedesireforpleasureandfunisalsoaverystrongneedamongadolescents.Oneofthesignsofmaturityistheabilitytodelayimmediatepleasureandlookatlong-rangegoals.Thesegoalsdonothavetobespecificallydefined,buttheymustbeone鈥檚own.Astudentmusthaveasenseofworkingtowardagoalorrewardthatheorshereallywants,whetheritisthepleasureofagoodgrade,astillundefinedcareer,orstatusandsecurity.Collegeworkislikelytoseemgrim,difficultandevenmeaninglessifitisnotrelatedtopersonalgoalsandobjectives.
